Royal Gala is the apple most people secretly prefer but don't know by name. Not too sweet, not too tart, always crunchy, reliably rosy-pink on the outside and creamy-white within. It's the apple you pack in a kid's lunch, slice over porridge, or eat on a train journey. Universally liked — controversial only in the sense that nothing is wrong with it.
